The Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional Conduct of the Education Profession in Florida guides our behaviors and responsibilities as educators in Florida. This conduct establishes a framework so all teachers uphold high standards of professionalism, protect students' rights and wellbeing, promote trust and accountability, support ethical decision-making, and hold our reputation as teachers.
During level 3, one of my students was not participating in work. I knew this was not like him, so I pulled him into the hallway and asked him what was wrong. He began to cry while explaining that he was getting bullied by his peers. I took about 30 minutes to talk with him and come up with a solution to talk to his peers about how he was feeling about the remarks made. I then gave up my lunch and ate with the group of students. The student was able to feel confident in expressing his feelings at the table and let his peers know how they were making him feel. His peers were able to understand and apologized, and we were able to have a great rest of the day. I checked in with the student multiple times since no further problems have occurred, and he feels confident in letting his peers know when something hurts his feelings.
This instance relates to the student's well-being: “Shall make reasonable effort to protect the student from conditions harmful to learning and/or to the student’s mental and/or physical health and/or safety.” I noticed that this student's behavior was not normal, so I felt the need to intervene for the safety of the student’s mental health. Doing so, we resolved the issue, and he has been happy since.
