Throughout the year, we have taken many state and regular assessments in the classroom. Based on the results from each student, students have been placed into different groups for RTI and ELA. Having this data and understanding these needs allowed me to differentiate my lessons based on these things.
One of my behavior ELL students has a hard time participating in whole group lessons. He lacks fine motor skills, so even if he knows the answer, he refuses to do the work since he has a hard time writing. One thing that will help him write is this dog paper clip holder. Each morning, he goes up to the dog (Petitio) and says hi. We allow him to have the dog at his desk if he finishes his morning work. During my math lesson, he was willing to participate and come up to the board to write the answers since he got to hold Petitio. This resulted in him getting a 100% on the unit test, his first 100.
